Grazers: Meat & Bread, Vancouver & Victoria

It’s a new year and we’re all still emerging from the holiday fog, so let’s keep it simple.

Meat & Bread.

Doesn’t get much more simple than that. And when it comes right down to it, there are few things more satisfying, more gratifying, more budget-soothing and soul comforting (the latters also needed in January) than a kick-ass sandwich.

The restaurant began life in Vancouver in 2010 in Gastown, before founders Frankie Harrington and Cord Jarvie opened a second location 18 months later nearby at Oceanic Plaza. Lunchtime lineups were a common sight, and a seat at the coveted communal table or countertop was gold. Last year they opened their third shop in downtown Victoria, and plans were just announced for a Seattle location to open this spring (get ready Capitol Hill).

Interiors appear as deceptively simple and utilitarian as the eatery’s name and concept, but are at sensual treat: see the piles of fresh bread, watch the crew preparing your fresh sandwiches, smell the porchetta roasting, commune with your fellow hungry citizens. Four sandwiches make up the daily menu, including the classic Porchetta and salsa verde (dream-worthy) and one vegetarian option. Lucky Victorians also have the mainstay Jerk Chicken in the lineup—a crunch worthy meal courtesy of jicama cabbage slaw, pickled red onion and cilantro lime aioli. Two salads/sides and a couple of little sweets (think Kid Sister Chipotle Salted Caramel Ice Cream) fill out the menu, washed down with a few local beer, cider and wines. Bonus – you can even follow them on twitter (location specific) or check the website to find out the daily menu, and have something to dream about all morning long. All meats prepared at are ethically raised and locally sourced, breads produced locally and produce as fresh as it comes.

Of course, the hardest thing in the world is to do something simple, well. These folks are excelling at keeping it simple.
