Fox-Tail Cider: The Highlander

by | Mar 17, 2015

Fox-Tail Cider, one of the latest cider companies out of the Columbia River Gorge (currently boasting 10 ciders on tap, with another two prepped to roll out in the coming months), represents some of the wonderfully diverse and eclectic nature and flavors of the region. Since opening in the summer of 2013 by fifth generation Gorge orchardist Bob Fox, Fox-Tail has become a fixture at local festivals and taprooms.

Nothing quite epitomizes the Hood River Valley in Oregon as a gorgeous view of snow capped mountains framed by a blossoming apple orchard. How can anyone wish for a better view for a cidery? The appropriately named Highlander cider (“There can only be one!”) is currently the most robust cider on their flight, clocking in at a whopping 8.5 percent ABV. This cider is both strong and full of flavor, harkening back to the people of ancient Scotland who demand something a little more to warm them up. Aromas of tart apples, pineapple and Asian pears translate on the palate with crisp, intense and strong flavors apples. The off-dry quality pairs nicely with an alcohol sweetness, sure to attract fans of sour beer or bourbon. It’s a cider that deserves your attention, and reminds you of the unique quality cider holds in the drinks world.
