Drinking Chocolates for the Masses

by | Nov 11, 2013

Dating back some 2,000 years, liquid was the original form in which cultures savored and enjoyed the richly satisfying flavor of the cacao bean. Mastered by the Mayans and adopted and revered by Europeans, drinking chocolate is still enjoyed today. With countless chocolatiers from Vancouver to Portland, the Northwest boasts its love for drinking chocolates throughout the region.

If you’re up north in Vancouver, stop by Thierry and indulge in a selection of their in-house liquid chocolates. You can sip on their trademark house blend straight-up, or get adventurous by infusing your chocolate with chili, caramel or hazelnut flavoring.

Another Vancouver favorite for drinking chocolates is Mink. You can either purchase a cup of Mink’s smooth and luscious drinking chocolate to enjoy in-store, or take a jar of their pure and fresh chocolate ganache home with you and enjoy drinking chocolate anytime.

Seattleites get spoiled when it comes to the chocolatey stuff. With several chocolatiers across the region, there are lots of options for enjoying this ancient treat. Chocolat Vitale features a full line of drinking chocolates available for purchase online or in-store at various local retailers such as Theo Chocolates. Try flavors like chocolate espresso, orange spice, or the European classic.

Named one of America’s best, Chocopolis, also located in Seattle, serves a rich and thick drinking chocolate that will “hug you from the inside.” In addition to Chocopolis’ own line of drinking chocolates, you can also purchase drinking chocolate varieties from other makers including Chocolat Moderne and Jacques Torres.

If you find yourself in downtown Portland, Cacao is the premier chocolatier when it comes to chocolate of the drinking variety in PDX. With a focus on Northwest chocolate makers and an emphasis for the drinkable stuff, you can enjoy Cacao at either of their two Portland locations, or purchase online coming soon.

This ancient beverage has been enjoyed across the world for many centuries. If you haven’t yet indulged in this age-old drink, head to one of these Northwest locations and enjoy a cup of this confectionery bliss.
