Drifters: Sutton Place Hotel, Vancouver

by | Nov 12, 2014

Every city has them. Those familiar, steadfast places that remind me of buoys—riding the tide through ups and downs, surfing the trends, eyeing the temping but dangerous rocky reefs and keeping above water throughout.

Sure, fashion comes and goes, and some years you’re hot and some you’re frigid, but when you stay true to story (with a renovation here and there) you can keep afloat and above the waves.

Classic, timeless and independently so, Vancouver’s Sutton Place Hotel is one such property. The stately boutique property is one of a trio of hotels across western Canada, each location known for its timeless elegance, upscale décor and quiet, welcoming customer service. From its envied location in downtown Vancouver, guests can easily walk to the downtown shopping district (two blocks) and be in any of Vancouver’s top dining locations within a 10 minute drive, bridge traffic withstanding. Not that you need to leave the hotel to enjoy a chic dinner or a convivial platter of freshly shucked oysters and Champagne—see my recent Grazers story on Boulevard Restaurant for proof.

Guest rooms at The Sutton Place uphold that timeless, classic esthetic, with cityscapes out onto the main shopping district and mountain vistas beyond. Amenities are thoughtful and appreciated; plush bathrobes, high-speed internet and a well-stocked minibar go a long way for a weary business traveler. Elegant finishings and sumptuous bedding ensures a restful short stay, though if you need/want to be in the city longer than a week, La Grande Residence, located in a private building adjacent to the main hotel premises, has 164 spacious one and two bedroom fully furnished suites with balconies to accommodate you.

Of particular note to any like-minded travelers to me is the Sutton Place Wine Merchant, a cozy fine wine shop off the front of the property with knowledgeable staff and more than 700 wines to choose from (with a strong BC wine selection). Regular wine tastings and seminars are advertised in the guest suites, and the helpful staff are more than able to recommend something to suit you needs (or room service order). That’s a new amenity—to me—that will be hard to travel without. Talk about keeping ahead of the cresting wave—kudos Sutton Place Hotel.
