Drifters: Sleeping Lady

by | May 21, 2014

Summer camp for big kids, Sleeping Lady was built into the storied Camp Icicle and Civilian Conservation Corps at the edge of Bavarian-themed Leavenworth, Wash. In the heart of the Cascade Mountins, Sleeping Lady was founded by sustainable sage Harriet Bullitt who took the property that was built in the 1930s and brought it into a modern outdoor luxury. A haven for hippies who wanderlust and city folk who need to remove themselves for the hustle and bustle, Sleeping Lady takes you in with maternal arms spread wide.

The rustic resort offers a deluxe day spa with holistic and fairtrade luxury treatments, lush lofts and cabins equipped with log beds and soothing amenities and lodging packages including horseback riding, whitewater rafting, yoga retreats and more. Sustainability is big here—28,000 linear feet of Trex decking made from recycled plastic bags and wood scraps pave the walkways, a Geo-exchange system supplies heating and cooling, construction of the site was through reclaimed wood on site, an organic garden provides ingredients for the kitchen and the staff even uses electric vehicles to get around the property.

The Kingfisher Restaurant & Wine Bar is living proof of an oxymoron gone right—gourmet buffet. Fully stocked and loaded with the freshest local ingredients from the two-acre organic garden on the property, the menu changes daily to suit the moods of Mother Nature and Executive Chef Joshua Holmes. Also take advantage of the waterfall fountain patio at The Grotto bar and the Woodland Rock Pools (hot and cool) open 24 hours for your relaxation convenience.

The burgeoning Leavenworth wine scene is a stone’s throw across the valley from the resort, with nearly a dozen tasting rooms downtown and more in the outskirts in Cashmere and Peshastin. Wine and dine at the 2013 Washington State Wine Awards Restaurant of the Year, Visconti’s, and cap the night off with a sudsy libation at Icicle Brewing or München Haus to the tune of local live jams.
