Planting next door to the lauded Champoux Vineyard (see: Quilceda Creek, Andrew Will, Januik and more) has proven to be a solid plan for Double Canyon. Located in Washington’s Horse Heaven Hills, bordering the Yakima Valley, Double Canyon Vineyard was selected for the namesake winery’s site the same year the appellation received its designation and vines were planted two years later in 2007. The area is celebrated for its distinct and prestigious Cabernet Sauvignon-growing land, producing wines of great complexity and quality.
Double Canyon receives its name from the two ravines that run through this property and devotes that title exclusively to Cabernet Sauvignon-labeled wines, one from the estate vineyard and another from a select few neighboring sites. For a fairly young site, Double Canyon has been awarded accolades that not only speak to the region but to the wines themselves. The 2012 Double Canyon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon has hefty nods from press and rightly so—far from flashy but poised and polished, this Cabernet showcases the fruits of an ideal harvest from a powerful AVA.
A bouquet of violet, plum and black cherry supply the initial aromatics, with scents of cocoa, dusty earth and cassis releasing with air. Dark berries, creamy French oak and lifting acid are squeezed to the side with mouthwatering tannins and full, forward fruit. Stoic and strong, this style of Cab speaks of intricate detail from this site that will only provide more complexities in future vintages.
