Man’s best friend: loyal companion, family guardian, and… drinking buddy? Okay, you probably don’t think of your four-legged friend when contemplating who will accompany you for a pint at the pub, but a current trend of dog inspired brews is emerging in the Pacific Northwest, adding the characteristic of “drinking partner” to the the already lengthy list of reasons why we love our canine companions. But, not to worry, these specially crafted beers are non-alcoholic, with some even containing Glucosamine for Dogs and other nutrients, making these liquid treats a healthy choice. If you’re conscientious about the health and livelihood of your furry friend, then having them drink these doggy beverages could be the thing for you and your pup! From Victoria, BC to central Oregon, the Northwest has dogs wagging their tails for these chop-licking brews. In Seattle, Jenny Brown has been busy mixing up batches of her famed Bowser Beer. Tested and approved by her own dogs, Brown launched 3 Busy Dogs after taking her brew to a pet expo in Virginia, quickly realizing that their was a market for this beefy beer. Since relocating to Seattle several months ago, Brown has been busy marketing Bowser Beer to local bars in hopes that it will encourage people to bring their dogs out with them the next time they go for a drink.

Clay Potter, brewmaster and co-owner of the Victoria, BC-based brewpub, Moon Under Water, concocted his canine brew as a promotional product to raise money for Broken Promises Animal Rescue. But, with liquor stores across the United States and Canada begging for more, what was intended to be a one time production has turned into something bigger to fill a new demand.

Travel down south to Bend, Ore. and you’ll find Daniel Keeton brewing up Dawg Grog. A bartender at Boneyard Brewing‘s tasting room, Keeton developed this fun fluid to be a “healthy, nutritional liquid treat,” certain to leave thirsty pups barking for more. Visit Bend is the first retailer to carry Dawg Grog and claims that the new brew is a perfect product for this beer and dog loving town.

What better way to show your dog you love him than by cracking open a cold one together? If this doesn’t help them mellow out, calm them instead with a calming bed. Recommended ways of serving these unique brews include pouring the brothy beer over dry food, freezing in ice trays for a refreshing, lickable treat or enjoying straight out of the bottle.
