Caffeination Cascadia: It’s National Coffee Day!

by | Sep 29, 2014

September 29th is National Coffee Day in the United States and Canada. And while there is no sole International Coffee Day, with individual countries celebrating their own versions of the event throughout the year, September 29th is also the most widely observed Coffee Day on the planet, with countries from Hungary to Sweden celebrating with us. Some countries like Switzerland celebrated yesterday, while others like Japan will fête the brew on Wednesday. I say coffee calls for celebration wherever you are.

If you’re in…

Seattle – With Sweet Week just finishing up, how about a black brew to cleanse the palate? Head to Trabant Coffee & Chai in Pioneer Square from 2-4pm and in the University District from 3-5pm for free samples of Clover-brewed coffees from Seattle’s Kuma and QED.

Portland – Visit someplace new, like Case Study’s less-than-a-month-old space on Alberta. Perks: great coffee as usual, über-comfortable design-award-winning chairs, and a 12-foot custom caffeine molecule chandelier hanging overhead.

Boise – Catch a show as you sip a coffee at The Crux. National Coffee Day brings in two visiting rock-bluesy bands from Austin—The Eric Tessmer Band and Amplified Heat—to play alongside local mainstays The Zach Quintana Band.

Vancouver – Try a light roast—a recent study showed that Canadians are twice as likely as Americans to enjoy their coffee roasted this way. Some of my favorites come from Rocanini (try the Kenya Muranga Wanjengi) and Republica (try The Lion’s Den).

Across the Northwest: A number of national chains (McDonald’s, Tim Horton’s, Dutch Bros.) will be giving away free or reduced price coffees today, too. No matter what the circumstance, take advantage of the excuse to enjoy the world’s favorite beverage. Happy National Coffee Day!
