Bows & Arrows Coffee Roasters The Hathaway Espresso

by | Apr 13, 2015

When I walk into a café, there are a few key indicators that I look for, and what beans they’re brewing is one of the biggies. When I see bags of Bows & Arrows, I know I’m in a solid place. This small family-and-friend-run business in Victoria is tucked into a bright, garage space in the industrial area of Rock Bay, but Drew Johnson and his wife Leesha Sabine’s light-roast beans are seen in the better cafes around BC, Canada and beyond (Seattle’s Milstead & Co. is one stateside stockist).

Their gentle roasts allow the origin of the bean and blend to do the communicating rather than the heavy hand of the roaster. Layers of flavors roll out of their characterful brews, each distinct and singular, and sourced sustainably and direct from reputable growers and distributors. My daily go-to is The Hathaway Espresso, a blend of 60 percent Nicaragua Finca Las Praderas and 40 percent El Salvador Los Sueños, with subtle caramel, citrus and salted nutty notes.
