Bike ‘n Brews: 9 Beer Stops Off the Trail

by | Oct 2, 2018

Embrace the outdoors while the skies are still free of precipitation and you don’t need to dress in layers to step outside. Grab your bike and venture out to these trails for a tour de brews that will have you thirsting for a beer in no time. Make sure to hydrate and limit your destinations so your ride home is responsible and isn’t more difficult than it needs to be.

Phillips Brewing & Malt | Victoria, BC
Take the Galloping Goose trail to explore Victoria and all it has to offer. Then visit Phillips Brewing, established in 2001 by Matt Phillips who maxed out all the credit cards he could get to open the brewery which has since expanded into a distillery, a soda company and its own maltworks.

Peddler Brewing Co. | Seattle
If you’re a lover of bikes and beer then Peddler is the place to be. Peddler is just off the Burke Gilman Trail in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood. Stop by to pump up your tires or take a rest and play some corn hole before you hop back on the trail. Tip: come with a hungry stomach, Mean Sandwich — which made Bon Appetit‘s Best Restaurants of 2017 list — is next door and has a window in which you can order and pick up a sandwich.

Granville Island Brewing | Vancouver, BC
This one isn’t exactly off a trail but if you find yourself up north in Vancouver for the weekend spend a day exploring the city on bike, this is a stop to make. Tour Stanley Park and then head over to Granville Island where you can hit up the public market for some food and shopping and visit Canada’s first microbrewery, beloved for its Island Lager.

Bend Brewing | Bend, OR
Bend Brewing is the perfect destination — or stop — for a ride along the Deschutes River. If you’re a mountain biker hit the Deschutes River Trail and then come in to Bend Brewing’s pub for a well-deserved drink and meal. Around since 1995, Bend Brewing is one of the older craft breweries in the city.

Cairn Brewing + Nine Yards Brewing + 192 Brewing | Kenmore, WA
If you’re up for a longer ride or maybe just want to make it a whole day ordeal, jump on the Burke Gilman, just blocks from the Sammamish River as it breaks off from Lake Washington, and hit this trio of young breweries adjacent to the trail. Cairn touts 18 taps (four for guest cider), Nine Yards with several big screen TVs and a projector for game days and 192 supplies a broad food menu with classic pub grub.

Zoiglhaus Brewing | Portland
When cycling the Springwater Corridor, a 21-mile bikeway that feeds through SE Portland, make a pitstop a few blocks off the trail at Zoiglhaus Brewing, a Bavarian-influenced brewery pouring its gold-medal-winning German-style lagers and ales next to pizzas and, of course, brats.
