Caffeination Cascadia: Five More Coffee Shops That Aren’t Just Coffee Shops

by | Nov 3, 2014

Back when I first started this column, I ran a list of five coffee shops that weren’t just coffee shops. From the Portland haunted house to the Spokane tech center to the Vancouver men’s clothing store, each added an element beyond coffee, whether that was of business or guidance or artistry. Today, an update: here are five more coffee shops that do more than just pull shots.

The DIY laser cutter emporium. Open Wednesday to Sunday in Vancouver, The Laser Cutter Café is available for visitors to make use of said tools (also available are 3-D printers, a full wood shop, a textile lab… the list carries on) to craft anything from etched glass and wood signs to fancy party invitations and models. New visitors simply sign up for one of the weekly introductory classes, then use the machines to make most anything they can dream up for a mere $2 per minute. || 196 Kingsway, Vancouver, BC

The gamer’s paradise. Billed simply as “A Game Parlour,” Café Mox brings together lovers of games of all kinds—board, card, role-play, online—and offers a haven where keeping a table over the course of an hours-long session of Arkham Horror or several rounds of Settlers of Catan is perfectly acceptable and encouraged. Mox also features private group game rooms for rent, a full espresso bar, local wines and beers on tap, a varied food menu and a full spectrum of games for sale in the adjacent room. || 5105 Leary Avenue Northwest, Seattle.

The motorcycle store. Portland’s See See Motor Coffee Company brings together the seemingly disparate with espresso from Stumptown, beer, motorcycles, parts and apparel for purchase in the same space, and even a daily hot dog happy hour. || 1642 Northeast Sandy Boulevard, Portland.

The one-stop post office. Now with two Seattle locations, Sip & Ship lets you enjoy a latte or iced coffee while employees help you prep and mail everything from postcards to care packages. On the sip side of things, Seattle-based Strawberry Moon Juice, Mighty-O Donuts and Herkimer Coffee are served. On the ship side, send via FedEx, UPS, USPS or DHL. You can even pick up a 12-ounce bag of Sip & Ship’s proprietary coffee roast (among other gifts), to have wrapped with a card and sent directly from the store. ||  1752 Northwest Market Street & 7511 Greenwood Avenue North, Seattle.

The sports bar coffeehouse. Sports—specifically soccer, but Trailblazers too—are the main attraction at Beulahland. That goes with the all-day coffee, cheap food and drinks, pinball machines, music shows, comfy couches, an outdoor patio, a mishmash of curious décor and a truly neighborhood vibe. || 118 Northeast 28th Avenue, Portland.
