What’s better than cracking open an ice cold beer on a hot summer day? Cracking open an ice cold beer and blending it with a generous helping of ice cream. “Beershakes” are one of those over-indulgent treats that I rarely spoil myself with, so I like to save them for days when I know I’ll appreciate the ice cold, frothy sweetness the most. Since it has been exceptionally warm this past week, I thought the timing was perfect to share my recipe for this sweet, summery splurge.
The best part about beershakes is that the ice cream and beer combinations for this summery treat are endless. I chose to make my beershake with Rogue Ales’ Mocha Porter for its bittersweet body and light cream finish. Since the notes of coffee are strong in this beer, I opted to stay in theme by loading my glass with scoops of coffee ice cream for an extra jolt. Of course, you can switch up the flavor easily by using a different flavors of ice cream, beer, or both. For something on the more chocolatey side, try using Longboat Chocolate Porter from Phillips Brewing Co. in Victoria, BC and subbing coffee ice cream for your favorite chocolate or vanilla variety. For something on the “lighter,” sweeter side, try Harmon Brewing Company’s Vanilla Porter mixed with vanilla ice cream.
Ready for some cool, sudsy, summer sweetness? Get out the blender, grab a few of your favorite dark beers, and getting ready to bask, beershake in hand.
Prep time: 5 minutes
Makes: 2 beershakes
Ingredients:
2 cups coffee ice cream (or ice cream of your choice)
2 cups Rogue Ales’ Mocha Porter (or dark beer of your choice)
½ cup milk
Directions:
Add all ingredients to blender. Blend on low speed until a consistent, creamy texture forms.
Pour into glasses and serve. You can make an even more simple “beer float” by filling a glass half-full with beer and topping with two small scoops of ice cream.
