A trip through the Columbia River Gorge for a day of wine tasting usually finds the furthest destination at Maryhill Winery. But the distance hasn’t dismayed thousands of wine lovers from visiting its scenic location every year, helping to make it the 10th largest winery in the state of Washington. Armed with an impressive selection of more than 50 different wines, representing nearly 30 different varietals, Maryhill has popped up on numerous “Winery of the Year” lists, including winning the coveted “International Winery of the Year” at the 2014 San Francisco International Wine Competition.
For owners Craig and Vicki Leuthold, and head winemaker Richard Batchelor, sticking with the “tried-and-true” was never an option. New varietals and new blends challenge what the customer knows and loves by giving them a unknown, yet soon to love alternative. Their 2012 Proprietor’s Reserve Grenache accomplishes this on all fronts, giving drinkers a twist on the traditionally lighter red wine, by offering a heavier version that pairs well with almost any meat and side dish. Aromas of dark cherry, blueberries and pepper lead to a palate of caramel, dark fruit, white pepper and toasted oak. Pair with a nice lamb or Sunday roast…and when in doubt…French toast (Seriously, it works).
