There’s always an opportunity. After nearly 80 years of rich history in fruit production, BC Tree Fruits has entered a whole new industry—alcohol—with the launch of BC Tree Fruits Cider Company last month. The longtime cooperative represents more than 500 families who in turn represent more than 80 percent of the tree fruits grown in British Columbia. The new venture has been years in the works, including an intensive recipe process, partnerships with experts in the craft cider market and the build out of the in-house cidery and tasting room in Kelowna, BC.
“Cider is the perfect answer for apples not destined for the fresh market,” says Mike Daley, BC Tree Fruits product manager. “We envisioned a cider true to its natural form. The taste is as real as it gets—it was natural move. We have all of the varieties and the best fruit to pick from, it makes sense to add value for these families and consumers by creating a cider, true to their roots.”
BC Tree Fruits Cider Company’s first cider offering is Broken Ladder, a secret blend of six local apple varieties picked from Okanagan Valley orchards. With proudly only one ingredient on the can—apples—it is as pure and refreshing as, well, biting into an apple. Softly sweet on the nose, with lively, fine bubbles and a crisp, tight, medium bodied and juicy palate.
