Anthem Ransom Gin Barrel Cider

by | Dec 2, 2014

Who says wine, whiskey and beer get to have all the barrel-aged fun? Salem, Oregon’s Anthem Cider wants in on the good times and does so with their limited release (and only seen in keg) gin barrel-aged cider, barrel courtesy of Ransom Spirits‘ Old Tom gin. Anthem, which kicked off production in 2010 with a nudge from sister cidery Wandering Aengus Ciderworks, isn’t new to the game of avant garde cider either—they were the first cidery in North America to produce a hopped cider, with local Cascade hops nonetheless. The Anthem Ransom Gin Barrel Cider steps outside of the box again by taking Old Tom gin barrels from fellow Oregonian and maverick Ransom, fermenting with wine yeast strains and aging their cider for four weeks in barrel. The result is cider spiked—not just with savory aromatics of juniper, coriander, orange peel and toasted oak but the juicy palate widens from the wood-treatment, expanding into a full-figured and uniquely balanced cider.
