The Horse Heaven Hills Wine Trail Drive paves the region’s way

As spring has nearly sprung, summer is coming fast and it’ll be time to plan many relaxing vacations. One place wine lovers are sure to find peace and serenity this season is in Washington’s Horse Heaven Hills.

Bordered by the Columbia River and Valley and just three hours northeast of Portland, take in the area’s stunning views with a drive through the wine trails of one of Washington’s most wine awarded regions. Making up 25 percent of Washington’s vineyard acreage, this area is home to nearly 30 wineries including Columbia Crest, McKinley Springs Winery, Mercer Canyons and, opening its doors for the first of two times this year, Chateau Champoux.

For a more festive retreat, the winegrowers’ 8th Annual Trail Drive event is returning Saturday, July 20. Proceeds from the event will support scholarships in viticulture and enology education.

Your journey starts at 11 a.m., at one of three designated wineries, where you’ll receive a commemorative wine glass and the first tasting. When you’re done there, traveling and tasting through the rest of the hills should take about four to five hours.

Agreeing on a designated driver can be a tough task sometimes, but nonetheless responsibility is important while tasting. In the occurrence you can’t decide, the event is offering a bus to get you to where you need to be. But chauffeuring won’t be the only plus one the bus — you’ll also be entertained and educated by your very own grower guide as you traverse the trails.

After you’ve completed your day of tasting, rejuvenate by the Columbia River with an exclusive BBQ in Crow Butte Park, accompanied by live music.

Saturday, July 20 || 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. (tasting), 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. (BBQ) || Alderdale to Paterson, Wash. || Tickets: $35 – $75
