Vancouver sommelier launches the city’s first custom-production winery

Wine lovers, you’ve had that dream – the one where you’re pouring yourself the first glass of wine you’ve just spent months making. But at some point you will be rudely awoken and forced to go back to your busy life, until now.

Introducing Wineshare, Vancouver’s first-ever custom winemaking seminar. Participants here will get the full hands-on experience through working on the planning process, harvesting, producing and branding of their own label for the bottles.

Founder and local Vancouver Sommelier Emily Walker along with Howling Bluff owner and winemaker Luke Smith have partnered with the Vancouver Urban Winery to hold all of the production processes. The wines will derive fruits from the Northwest’s best in regions, from the Okanagan Valley, and into Washington, Oregon and California. Walker and Smith will work collaboratively to source fruits and determine the best varietal to produce for each project.

This year, Wineshare’s first project will work with as many as 12 people to produce cases of Pinot Noir from the finest grapes in the Okanagan Valley.

Participants will have the option of how involved they want to be with their dream. Plan a trip to the vineyard where the grapes are grown, crush them, fill your barrels and design your own label. In a short time, your wine and your dream will be ready to share and enjoy. An all-inclusive cost for Wineshare varies but steadies around $3,995.

In 2014, Walker hopes to expand Wineshare with projects consisting of different varieties of wines from different regions. Each project will have a minimum of six shares, or six people working on a single project of their interest. Walker and Smith have begun the planning process for this year’s project. Those interested in taking part in this year’s Wineshare should contact Walker. Dates for events have yet to be announced.
