Abram Goldman-Armstrong has been making cider for more than half of his existence. From planting traditional cider trees in high school for Oregon’s legendary (yet now defunct) inaugural cidery, White Oak Cider, to drinking liters of cider while in college in Cork City, Ireland, Goldman-Armstrong natural path was to start his own nano-cidery. A certified beer judge by the age of 21 and avid regional beer writer, Goldman-Armstrong’s early rising to the industry has kept him on the pulse—including being the first cidery to put cider in a two liter bottle. Using “wild” apples from Yamhill, Ore., picked by friends and family, along with traditional cider apples from White Oak (that he very well might have planted himself years earlier), Cider Riot! was created on the “magic” of cider that Armstrong seems to know well.
Launched on a Kickstarter campaign and released earlier this year in Portland and British Columbia, Cider Riot! now has a full line of Oregon-grown ciders including the Burncider, a dry draught cider inspired by the pub ciders of English West Country. The aromas are lush in rich and creamy apple juice, with earth and tartness providing complexity. Flavorsome and round but dry, tart and brisk, this cider will satisfy a homesick Brit and intrigue the adventurous Northwesterner.
