Slapped with tastefully chic nautical branding, the products of Old Salt Merchants in Washington’s seaport of Port Townsend don the face of Butch, the curmudgeonly fictitious seaman who represents sailors of the area’s past and present. Other than sporting appealing packaging (helps that co-owner Anika Colvin is a graphic designer by trade), the family-run provisions company specializes mostly in salts (lime, smoked sea salt), sugars (Jamaican ginger, rum-soaked) and, most recently, teas. From the four-point line-up is the Equator Green Tea, based on sencha green tea and blended with mango, hibiscus, apple, raspberry, orange peel and rosehips pieces. Hawked as a method to “fight scurvy,” the tea is fragrant and full with aromas jasmine, sencha leaves, citrus and berry for a full-bodied and invigorating cup.
